Omschrijving:
De stad Vancouver aan de westkust van Canada
Van Vancouver wordt wel gezegd dat je er ’s ochtends golf kunt spelen, ’s middags kunt zeilen en ’s avonds nog even kan gaan skiën in de bergen. Niet dat iemand het ook maar in zijn hoofd zou halen dat op één dag te doen, maar de mogelijkheid bestaat wel, althans gedurende een deel van het jaar.
Vancouver is vernoemd naar een Engelse kapitein, George Vancouver. Zijn voorouders waren Nederlanders die waarschijnlijk "Van Coevorden" heetten, maar helemaal zeker is dit niet.
De stad ligt tussen de beboste bergen van de Coastal Mountains aan de monding van de Fraser-rivier aan de westkust van Canada. Die bergen lopen steil af naar de kust waar de natuurlijke haven van Vancouver aan de Straat van Georgia een van de belangrijkste havens van Canada is.
Aan de kust liggen prachtige zandstranden. Dankzij de Japanse Golfstroom is het zeewater er relatief warm en geniet Vancouver een zeer gematigd klimaat, waar de temperatuur in januari zelden onder het vriespunt komt Niet voor niets geldt Vancouver als een van de aantrekkelijkste steden ter wereld om in te wonen. Ook de Canadezen vinden dat en er zijn er heel wat die het koude Montréal of Toronto verruilen voor een leven aan de westkust. Vancouver heeft zo’n 600.000 inwoners maar in het hele stedelijke gebied rond de stad wonen 2 miljoen mensen.
Vancouver is zeer multicultureel: de stad kent de op een na grootste Chinese wijk van Noord-Amerika. Verder zijn er veel immigranten uit Zuid-Europa en Azië. De laatste jaren zijn ook veel Oost-Europeanen naar Vancouver getrokken.
Vancouver is de grootste stad van British Columbia maar niet de hoofdstad van deze provincie. Dat is het erg Brits aandoende Victoria op Vancouver Island aan de overkant van de Straat van Georgia. Het is een zeer groene stad: Vancouver heeft meer dan 180 stadsparken, met Stanley Park als het absolute hoogtepunt. Dit 400 ha grote park ligt op een schiereiland in de Burrard Inlet. Aan de westkant liggen enkele stadsstranden en in het oosten van het park vind je het Vancouver Aquarium. Verder staan er oude Indiaanse totempalen in Stanley Park.
Oude centrum
Het oude centrum van Vancouver is helemaal opgeknapt. In de jaren '70 was het oudste deel – Gastown – zwaar vervallen, maar het heeft sindsdien een opleving doorgemaakt. Nu is de wijk een toeristische trekpleister: straten met kinderkopjes en oude lantaarns, Victoriaanse architectuur, vele boetiekjes kunstgaleries, bars en restaurants. Daar vlakbij ligt Granville Island, een grote markt waar vele straatartiesten hun kunsten opvoeren. De inwoners van Vancouver brengen daar graag een deel van hun weekend door.
Het antropologisch museum van Vancouver heeft een prachtige collectie Indiaanse kunst. Een bijzondere ervaring is het ondergrondse Storyeum in Gastown: live theatervoorstellingen over de geschiedenis van Vancouver en British Columbia.
Van de Wereldtentoonstelling in 1986 (Expo 86) is Canada Place overgebleven. Het is nu de aanlegplaats voor cruiseschepen en een conferentiecentrum, maar er is ook een technologiemuseum, Science World. Daar worden steeds wisselende tentoonstellingen gehouden en er is een bioscoop (Omnimax) met een gigantisch scherm. De organisatie van de Wereldtentoonstelling was uiterst succesvol. Dat heeft er ongetwijfeld toe bijgedragen dat Vancouver ook de Olympische Winterspelen van 2010 mocht organiseren.
Al met al de moeite om deze stad ook eens met een bezoek te vereeren, en tevens een bezoek te brengen aan het naast gelegen Victoria Island en dan met name de stad Victoria, daar wonen nog familie leden van mij die ik dan ook dit keer ga bezoeken.
Een nieuwe uitdaging en hoop op weer een mooie reis.

Daar worden steeds wisselende tentoonstellingen gehouden en er is een bioscoop (Omnimax) met een gigantisch scherm. De organisatie van de Wereldtentoonstelling was uiterst succesvol. Dat heeft er ongetwijfeld toe bijgedragen dat Vancouver ook de Olympische Winterspelen van 2010 mocht organiseren.
Al met al de moeite om deze stad ook eens met een bezoek te vereeren, en tevens een bezoek te brengen aan het naast gelegen Victoria Island en dan met name de stad Victoria, daar wonen nog familie leden van mij die ik dan ook dit keer ga bezoeken.
Een nieuwe uitdaging en hoop op weer een mooie reis.

Omschrijving:
De stad Vancouver aan de westkust van Canada
Van Vancouver wordt wel gezegd dat je er ’s ochtends golf kunt spelen, ’s middags kunt zeilen en ’s avonds nog even kan gaan skiën in de bergen. Niet dat iemand het ook maar in zijn hoofd zou halen dat op één dag te doen, maar de mogelijkheid bestaat wel, althans gedurende een deel van het jaar.
Vancouver is vernoemd naar een Engelse kapitein, George Vancouver. Zijn voorouders waren Nederlanders die waarschijnlijk "Van Coevorden" heetten, maar helemaal zeker is dit niet.
De stad ligt tussen de beboste bergen van de Coastal Mountains aan de monding van de Fraser-rivier aan de westkust van Canada. Die bergen lopen steil af naar de kust waar de natuurlijke haven van Vancouver aan de Straat van Georgia een van de belangrijkste havens van Canada is.
Aan de kust liggen prachtige zandstranden. Dankzij de Japanse Golfstroom is het zeewater er relatief warm en geniet Vancouver een zeer gematigd klimaat, waar de temperatuur in januari zelden onder het vriespunt komt Niet voor niets geldt Vancouver als een van de aantrekkelijkste steden ter wereld om in te wonen. Ook de Canadezen vinden dat en er zijn er heel wat die het koude Montréal of Toronto verruilen voor een leven aan de westkust. Vancouver heeft zo’n 600.000 inwoners maar in het hele stedelijke gebied rond de stad wonen 2 miljoen mensen.
Vancouver is zeer multicultureel: de stad kent de op een na grootste Chinese wijk van Noord-Amerika. Verder zijn er veel immigranten uit Zuid-Europa en Azië. De laatste jaren zijn ook veel Oost-Europeanen naar Vancouver getrokken.
Vancouver is de grootste stad van British Columbia maar niet de hoofdstad van deze provincie. Dat is het erg Brits aandoende Victoria op Vancouver Island aan de overkant van de Straat van Georgia. Het is een zeer groene stad: Vancouver heeft meer dan 180 stadsparken, met Stanley Park als het absolute hoogtepunt. Dit 400 ha grote park ligt op een schiereiland in de Burrard Inlet. Aan de westkant liggen enkele stadsstranden en in het oosten van het park vind je het Vancouver Aquarium. Verder staan er oude Indiaanse totempalen in Stanley Park.
Oude centrum
Het oude centrum van Vancouver is helemaal opgeknapt. In de jaren '70 was het oudste deel – Gastown – zwaar vervallen, maar het heeft sindsdien een opleving doorgemaakt. Nu is de wijk een toeristische trekpleister: straten met kinderkopjes en oude lantaarns, Victoriaanse architectuur, vele boetiekjes kunstgaleries, bars en restaurants. Daar vlakbij ligt Granville Island, een grote markt waar vele straatartiesten hun kunsten opvoeren. De inwoners van Vancouver brengen daar graag een deel van hun weekend door.
Het antropologisch museum van Vancouver heeft een prachtige collectie Indiaanse kunst. Een bijzondere ervaring is het ondergrondse Storyeum in Gastown: live theatervoorstellingen over de geschiedenis van Vancouver en British Columbia.
Van de Wereldtentoonstelling in 1986 (Expo 86) is Canada Place overgebleven. Het is nu de aanlegplaats voor cruiseschepen en een conferentiecentrum, maar er is ook een technologiemuseum, Science World. Daar worden steeds wisselende tentoonstellingen gehouden en er is een bioscoop (Omnimax) met een gigantisch scherm. De organisatie van de Wereldtentoonstelling was uiterst succesvol. Dat heeft er ongetwijfeld toe bijgedragen dat Vancouver ook de Olympische Winterspelen van 2010 mocht organiseren.
Al met al de moeite om deze stad ook eens met een bezoek te vereeren, en tevens een bezoek te brengen aan het naast gelegen Victoria Island en dan met name de stad Victoria, daar wonen nog familie leden van mij die ik dan ook dit keer ga bezoeken.
Een nieuwe uitdaging en hoop op weer een mooie reis.

Omschrijving:
De stad Vancouver aan de westkust van Canada
Van Vancouver wordt wel gezegd dat je er ’s ochtends golf kunt spelen, ’s middags kunt zeilen en ’s avonds nog even kan gaan skiën in de bergen. Niet dat iemand het ook maar in zijn hoofd zou halen dat op één dag te doen, maar de mogelijkheid bestaat wel, althans gedurende een deel van het jaar.
Vancouver is vernoemd naar een Engelse kapitein, George Vancouver. Zijn voorouders waren Nederlanders die waarschijnlijk "Van Coevorden" heetten, maar helemaal zeker is dit niet.
De stad ligt tussen de beboste bergen van de Coastal Mountains aan de monding van de Fraser-rivier aan de westkust van Canada. Die bergen lopen steil af naar de kust waar de natuurlijke haven van Vancouver aan de Straat van Georgia een van de belangrijkste havens van Canada is.
Aan de kust liggen prachtige zandstranden. Dankzij de Japanse Golfstroom is het zeewater er relatief warm en geniet Vancouver een zeer gematigd klimaat, waar de temperatuur in januari zelden onder het vriespunt komt Niet voor niets geldt Vancouver als een van de aantrekkelijkste steden ter wereld om in te wonen. Ook de Canadezen vinden dat en er zijn er heel wat die het koude Montréal of Toronto verruilen voor een leven aan de westkust. Vancouver heeft zo’n 600.000 inwoners maar in het hele stedelijke gebied rond de stad wonen 2 miljoen mensen.
Vancouver is zeer multicultureel: de stad kent de op een na grootste Chinese wijk van Noord-Amerika. Verder zijn er veel immigranten uit Zuid-Europa en Azië. De laatste jaren zijn ook veel Oost-Europeanen naar Vancouver getrokken.
Vancouver is de grootste stad van British Columbia maar niet de hoofdstad van deze provincie. Dat is het erg Brits aandoende Victoria op Vancouver Island aan de overkant van de Straat van Georgia. Het is een zeer groene stad: Vancouver heeft meer dan 180 stadsparken, met Stanley Park als het absolute hoogtepunt. Dit 400 ha grote park ligt op een schiereiland in de Burrard Inlet. Aan de westkant liggen enkele stadsstranden en in het oosten van het park vind je het Vancouver Aquarium. Verder staan er oude Indiaanse totempalen in Stanley Park.
Oude centrum
Het oude centrum van Vancouver is helemaal opgeknapt. In de jaren '70 was het oudste deel – Gastown – zwaar vervallen, maar het heeft sindsdien een opleving doorgemaakt. Nu is de wijk een toeristische trekpleister: straten met kinderkopjes en oude lantaarns, Victoriaanse architectuur, vele boetiekjes kunstgaleries, bars en restaurants. Daar vlakbij ligt Granville Island, een grote markt waar vele straatartiesten hun kunsten opvoeren. De inwoners van Vancouver brengen daar graag een deel van hun weekend door.

Omschrijving:
De stad Vancouver aan de westkust van Canada
Van Vancouver wordt wel gezegd dat je er ’s ochtends golf kunt spelen, ’s middags kunt zeilen en ’s avonds nog even kan gaan skiën in de bergen. Niet dat iemand het ook maar in zijn hoofd zou halen dat op één dag te doen, maar de mogelijkheid bestaat wel, althans gedurende een deel van het jaar.
Vancouver is vernoemd naar een Engelse kapitein, George Vancouver. Zijn voorouders waren Nederlanders die waarschijnlijk "Van Coevorden" heetten, maar helemaal zeker is dit niet.
De stad ligt tussen de beboste bergen van de Coastal Mountains aan de monding van de Fraser-rivier aan de westkust van Canada. Die bergen lopen steil af naar de kust waar de natuurlijke haven van Vancouver aan de Straat van Georgia een van de belangrijkste havens van Canada is.
Aan de kust liggen prachtige zandstranden. Dankzij de Japanse Golfstroom is het zeewater er relatief warm en geniet Vancouver een zeer gematigd klimaat, waar de temperatuur in januari zelden onder het vriespunt komt Niet voor niets geldt Vancouver als een van de aantrekkelijkste steden ter wereld om in te wonen. Ook de Canadezen vinden dat en er zijn er heel wat die het koude Montréal of Toronto verruilen voor een leven aan de westkust. Vancouver heeft zo’n 600.000 inwoners maar in het hele stedelijke gebied rond de stad wonen 2 miljoen mensen.
Vancouver is zeer multicultureel: de stad kent de op een na grootste Chinese wijk van Noord-Amerika. Verder zijn er veel immigranten uit Zuid-Europa en Azië. De laatste jaren zijn ook veel Oost-Europeanen naar Vancouver getrokken.
Vancouver is de grootste stad van British Columbia maar niet de hoofdstad van deze provincie. Dat is het erg Brits aandoende Victoria op Vancouver Island aan de overkant van de Straat van Georgia. Het is een zeer groene stad: Vancouver heeft meer dan 180 stadsparken, met Stanley Park als het absolute hoogtepunt. Dit 400 ha grote park ligt op een schiereiland in de Burrard Inlet. Aan de westkant liggen enkele stadsstranden en in het oosten van het park vind je het Vancouver Aquarium. Verder staan er oude Indiaanse totempalen in Stanley Park.
Oude centrum
Het oude centrum van Vancouver is helemaal opgeknapt. In de jaren '70 was het oudste deel – Gastown – zwaar vervallen, maar het heeft sindsdien een opleving doorgemaakt. Nu is de wijk een toeristische trekpleister: straten met kinderkopjes en oude lantaarns, Victoriaanse architectuur, vele boetiekjes kunstgaleries, bars en restaurants. Daar vlakbij ligt Granville Island, een grote markt waar vele straatartiesten hun kunsten opvoeren. De inwoners van Vancouver brengen daar graag een deel van hun weekend door.
Het antropologisch museum van Vancouver heeft een prachtige collectie Indiaanse kunst. Een bijzondere ervaring is het ondergrondse Storyeum in Gastown: live theatervoorstellingen over de geschiedenis van Vancouver en British Columbia.
Van de Wereldtentoonstelling in 1986 (Expo 86) is Canada Place overgebleven. Het is nu de aanlegplaats voor cruiseschepen en een conferentiecentrum, maar er is ook een technologiemuseum, Science World. Daar worden steeds wisselende tentoonstellingen gehouden en er is een bioscoop (Omnimax) met een gigantisch scherm. De organisatie van de Wereldtentoonstelling was uiterst succesvol. Dat heeft er ongetwijfeld toe bijgedragen dat Vancouver ook de Olympische Winterspelen van 2010 mocht organiseren.
Al met al de moeite om deze stad ook eens met een bezoek te vereeren, en tevens een bezoek te brengen aan het naast gelegen Victoria Island en dan met name de stad Victoria, daar wonen nog familie leden van mij die ik dan ook dit keer ga bezoeken.
Een nieuwe uitdaging en hoop op weer een mooie reis.

Van Vancouver wordt wel gezegd dat je er ’s ochtends golf kunt spelen, ’s middags kunt zeilen en ’s avonds nog even kan gaan skiën in de bergen. Niet dat iemand het ook maar in zijn hoofd zou halen dat op één dag te doen, maar de mogelijkheid bestaat wel, althans gedurende een deel van het jaar.
Vancouver is vernoemd naar een Engelse kapitein, George Vancouver. Zijn voorouders waren Nederlanders die waarschijnlijk "Van Coevorden" heetten, maar helemaal zeker is dit niet.
De stad ligt tussen de beboste bergen van de Coastal Mountains aan de monding van de Fraser-rivier aan de westkust van Canada. Die bergen lopen steil af naar de kust waar de natuurlijke haven van Vancouver aan de Straat van Georgia een van de belangrijkste havens van Canada is.
Aan de kust liggen prachtige zandstranden. Dankzij de Japanse Golfstroom is het zeewater er relatief warm en geniet Vancouver een zeer gematigd klimaat, waar de temperatuur in januari zelden onder het vriespunt komt Niet voor niets geldt Vancouver als een van de aantrekkelijkste steden ter wereld om in te wonen. Ook de Canadezen vinden dat en er zijn er heel wat die het koude Montréal of Toronto verruilen voor een leven aan de westkust. Vancouver heeft zo’n 600.000 inwoners maar in het hele stedelijke gebied rond de stad wonen 2 miljoen mensen.
Vancouver is zeer multicultureel: de stad kent de op een na grootste Chinese wijk van Noord-Amerika. Verder zijn er veel immigranten uit Zuid-Europa en Azië. De laatste jaren zijn ook veel Oost-Europeanen naar Vancouver getrokken.
Vancouver is de grootste stad van British Columbia maar niet de hoofdstad van deze provincie. Dat is het erg Brits aandoende Victoria op Vancouver Island aan de overkant van de Straat van Georgia. Het is een zeer groene stad: Vancouver heeft meer dan 180 stadsparken, met Stanley Park als het absolute hoogtepunt. Dit 400 ha grote park ligt op een schiereiland in de Burrard Inlet. Aan de westkant liggen enkele stadsstranden en in het oosten van het park vind je het Vancouver Aquarium. Verder staan er oude Indiaanse totempalen in Stanley Park.
Oude centrum
Het oude centrum van Vancouver is helemaal opgeknapt. In de jaren '70 was het oudste deel – Gastown – zwaar vervallen, maar het heeft sindsdien een opleving doorgemaakt. Nu is de wijk een toeristische trekpleister: straten met kinderkopjes en oude lantaarns, Victoriaanse architectuur, vele boetiekjes kunstgaleries, bars en restaurants. Daar vlakbij ligt Granville Island, een grote markt waar vele straatartiesten hun kunsten opvoeren. De inwoners van Vancouver brengen daar graag een deel van hun weekend door.
Het antropologisch museum van Vancouver heeft een prachtige collectie Indiaanse kunst. Een bijzondere ervaring is het ondergrondse Storyeum in Gastown: live theatervoorstellingen over de geschiedenis van Vancouver en British Columbia.
Van de Wereldtentoonstelling in 1986 (Expo 86) is Canada Place overgebleven. Het is nu de aanlegplaats voor cruiseschepen en een conferentiecentrum, maar er is ook een technologiemuseum, Science World. Daar worden steeds wisselende tentoonstellingen gehouden en er is een bioscoop (Omnimax) met een gigantisch scherm. De organisatie van de Wereldtentoonstelling was uiterst succesvol. Dat heeft er ongetwijfeld toe bijgedragen dat Vancouver ook de Olympische Winterspelen van 2010 mocht organiseren.
Al met al de moeite om deze stad ook eens met een bezoek te vereeren, en tevens een bezoek te brengen aan het naast gelegen Victoria Island en dan met name de stad Victoria, daar wonen nog familie leden van mij die ik dan ook dit keer ga bezoeken.
Een nieuwe uitdaging en hoop op weer een mooie reis.
